Holzweiler Oslo x B16

Holzweiler Oslo celebrates our hometown by connecting with different communities and people in the city. Holzweiler Oslo x B16 introduces B16, an Oslo-based dance collective of young black women. B16 started with a goal to share their craft with the world that will in turn, expand the horizon on who represents the dance field in Norway.

Who / what is B16?

B16 (Bydel 16) is a dance collective based in Oslo. The collective was established in 2021 and consists of 23 dancers, actors, singers, poets and writers between the ages of 16 and 32 who represent a rich spectrum of black women. The collective works widely within dance; performances, facilitating workshops and open talks for youths and young adults. We organise dance jams and battles.

Where and when did B16 start?

The idea and the urge to create a collective grew strongly in 2020 when the discussions around BLM sparked globally, but also during the spark of the #Metoo movement. The collective was then started by dance artist, Amie Mbye, after being in dialogue with the other dancers in the beginning of 2021.

What is the purpose of B16?

The collective has three overall goals:
1. Create a safe space where we can grow as dance artists and human beings
2. Create art and support each other's creative journeys
3. Share our craft with the world and expand the horizon for who represents the dance field in Norway.

What is B16 ́s connection to Oslo?

Most of us grew up in Oslo, and / or have a strong affiliation with the city. Oslo oozes with inspiring talent, and we can proudly say we are a part of that. In Oslo, we have the opportunity to showcase our art, whether that takes place at large institutions or on the streets in your neighbourhood. The space for us to create is there, and we do not take it for granted.

What does dance and movement mean for you and the other girls?

Dance means so much for us, but if we had to cut it down to one thing, we would say that dance is FREEDOM - the freedom to express who you are. The collective’s fundamental idea is that you can come as you are. The long-time goal is to find strength and acceptance in our individuality.

What are your hopes and dreams for the collective going forward?

We have exciting times ahead, both as a collective, but also as individuals. We are a creative group who love to dance and create dance art. Moving forward, you will see us in various dance contexts; on stage, in dance jams, in battles, on Instagram & Tik Tok, in panel discussions or on the TV in your living room. Keep your eyes open and stay tuned!

How important is community to B16?

Community is a key word in B16, and it’s one of the main reasons for the establishment of the collective. We are dancers from different parts and communities of the city, and yet we have found our way to each other. We believe in the importance of being seen, seeing others and acknowledging each other's strengths and challenges. In our community, you stand up for and acknowledge each other, push each other and lift each other up at the same time as there is space to critique each other and ask those «stupid» questions that you’re afraid to ask in public. This is the essence of B16. Everyone benefits from being part of a community, and therefore we open our space by organising different events where the people can come and take part in our community.
